My interest in the outdoors started at an early age and lead to receiving a degree in Landscape Architecture. That interest turned into a 25 year career with a residential design build company in the Washington DC area. During those years my knowledge as a Landscape Architect was honed designing spaces to reflect clients tastes, compliment surrounding architecture, and managing installations that used sound construction methods.
Residential construction was a family business that provided on-the-job training during summers in high school and college. My admiration for architecture developed into a study of design, balance, scale, and proportion that became an integral element in designing landscapes. As my knowledge grew I began to merge landscape and architecture into a whole. First designing simple structures like pergola’s and then more complex designs such as pool houses, residential additions and renovations.
Each project begins with a conversation to understand your goals and life style. As we refine the details a final design is achieved to reflect your tastes and desires. Budgets are reviewed during the design phase to assure the integrity of your goals are maintained within budget. Then the construction begins. A team of talented craftsmen are assembled to construct your project. My goal is to communicate with you the daily work progress, to coordinate the craftsmen for timely installation, and minimize the disruptions to your daily life.
The most grand design is only a concept until the first brick is laid, nail is hammered, and tree is planted. The images in the gallery are the result of design ideas turned into real spaces for living. Many of these structures and landscapes were built by the talented craftsmen at McHale Landscape Design during my tenure with the company. Thanks to Kevin McHale for sharing the photos.
